The Founder:
Master Siow Ho Phiew

was founded in 1986 by Siow Ho Phiew, a self‑taught master and visionary in the art of lion head making. Driven by passion and a deep respect for tradition, Siow dedicated himself to mastering the craft through years of disciplined experimentation and artistry.

Honing his skills from a young age, Siow mastered the intricate techniques of weaving rattan frameworks, layering bamboo paper and gauze, and then meticulously crafting vibrant lion heads in the traditional styles of Fut San and Hok San. His designs matured into a signature style—bold, dynamic, and expressive—which captured attention both locally and internationally.

Despite initially facing skepticism from a lion dance community grounded in convention, Siow’s creations soon earned respect. His experimental approach to design challenged norms and gradually gained acclaim for its creativity and craftsmanship.

Siow’s vision goes beyond mere tangible artistry. In interviews, he emphasized that lion dance is more than a cultural festivity—he believes it can be a sport and a universal expression that transcends race and religion, drawing people together through shared energy and artistry.

Under his leadership, the Wan Seng Hang workshop in Subang Jaya has grown into a prominent hub of lion dance artistry. Producing around 500 handmade lion heads a year, the center serves both local and global communities with unparalleled craftsmanship.

He persists in championing lion dance not just as a Malaysian tradition, but as a cultural art form worthy of global recognition. One of his ambitions has been to see lion dance included in local education curricula as a vital part of Malaysia’s cultural heritage.
